Washington, January 13, 2026 – The Europe Today: The U.S. Virtual Embassy Iran on Monday issued a security alert urging American citizens to leave Iran immediately as nationwide protests intensify across the country.
According to the notice, U.S. citizens were advised to consider departing Iran by land, noting that several border crossings remain open. The alert stated that land borders to Armenia at Agarak/Norduz and to Türkiye at Gürbulak/Bazargan, Kapıköy/Razi, and Esendere/Serow are currently accessible, News.Az reported.
The notice added that borders with Turkmenistan are also open; however, travelers are required to obtain prior special authorization before crossing.
The U.S. Virtual Embassy warned that continued internet outages should be expected and urged American citizens to plan alternative means of communication. “U.S. citizens should expect continued internet outages, plan alternative means of communication, and, if safe to do so, consider departing Iran by land to Armenia or Türkiye,” the alert said.
The advisory comes amid heightened security concerns as protests continue to spread, prompting authorities to issue precautionary guidance for foreign nationals in the country.
