Copenhagen, January 17, 2026 – The Europe Today: Thousands of demonstrators rallied across Denmark on Saturday in support of Greenland, protesting against remarks by US President Donald Trump that included threats to annex the Arctic island.
The protesters urged the United States to respect Greenlanders’ right to self-determination, rejecting any suggestion that the territory could be claimed or controlled by external powers. Trump has said Greenland is vital to US security due to its strategic location and significant mineral resources, and has not ruled out the use of force to take control of the island.
According to media reports, several European nations this week deployed military personnel to Greenland at Denmark’s request, amid rising concerns over regional security.
In Copenhagen, demonstrators gathered at City Hall Square before marching toward the US embassy. Chanting slogans such as “Greenland is not for sale” and “Hands off Greenland,” participants carried banners and waved Greenland’s red-and-white national flag, Erfalasorput.
Julie Rademacher, chair of Uagut, an organization representing Greenlanders in Denmark, expressed appreciation for the public support. “I am very grateful for the huge support we as Greenlanders receive. We are also sending a message to the world that you all must wake up,” she said.
Rademacher added that Greenland and its people had unwillingly become a focal point in a broader struggle. “Greenland and the Greenlanders have involuntarily become the front line in the fight for democracy and human rights,” she said.
The demonstrations underscored growing European concern over statements questioning Greenland’s sovereignty and highlighted continued support for the island’s political status and democratic rights.
