Athens, January 18, 2026 – The Europe Today: Greece is seeking to expand its territorial waters and establish a second maritime park in the Aegean Sea, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said on Friday, according to local media reports.
Speaking in parliament to independent lawmakers, Gerapetritis emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to consolidate Greece’s maritime sovereignty, the daily Kathimerini reported.
He said the conservative New Democracy government, in power since 2019, has taken a series of significant steps, including the creation of the country’s first Aegean marine park, the completion of Greece’s marine spatial planning framework, and the signing of maritime delimitation agreements with Egypt and Italy.
Addressing regional tensions, Gerapetritis described Türkiye’s “Blue Homeland” doctrine as “expansionist” and therefore unacceptable. However, he stressed that Greece now possesses stronger legal and diplomatic arguments than ever before, supported by European Union standards and principles.
Despite differences, the foreign minister said dialogue with Türkiye would continue, while underlining that Greece’s national sovereignty remains nonnegotiable.
Gerapetritis’ remarks followed a telephone conversation earlier this week with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, during which the two discussed bilateral relations and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ anticipated visit to Türkiye in February.
