Davos, January 20, 2026 – The Europe Today: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday declared that Europe’s response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats would be “unflinching, united, and proportional,” while reaffirming solidarity with Greenland and Denmark.
The remarks came in the wake of Trump’s announcement on Saturday that he would impose a 10 per cent import tax starting in February on goods from eight European nations, citing their opposition to U.S. influence over Greenland, media reports said.
Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of Denmark, is part of both the European Union and the U.S.-led NATO alliance.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, von der Leyen called the proposed tariffs “a mistake, especially between long-standing allies.” She added that a confrontation would only benefit common adversaries.
“Our response will be unflinching, united and proportional,” she asserted, emphasizing that Europe stands in full solidarity with Greenland and Denmark, whose sovereignty she described as “non-negotiable.”
Von der Leyen also highlighted Europe’s willingness to cooperate with the U.S. on Arctic security, noting the importance of strengthening security partnerships with regional allies including the U.K., Canada, Norway, and Iceland.
