Washington D.C., January 23, 2026 – The Europe Today: A major winter storm is forecast to bring heavy snow, ice, and dangerously cold temperatures across much of the United States in the coming days, meteorologists warned. The storm, expected to develop from Friday into early next week, could affect hundreds of miles and create multiple weather hazards for different regions, media reports said.
As of Thursday, weather advisories, watches, or warnings are in effect across 46 states, highlighting the storm’s widespread impact. Forecasters also cautioned that extreme and potentially record-breaking cold will spread across the eastern half of the country, causing rapid and hazardous changes in conditions.
In Dallas, for example, the afternoon “feels-like” temperature on Saturday is expected to be 40 degrees colder than Thursday, illustrating the severity of the cold front accompanying the storm.
Snowfall totals of 6 to 12 inches are expected across a broad swath of the country, from the southern Plains through the Ohio Valley and into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with localized amounts potentially exceeding a foot. Several major cities lie within the projected snow band, and heavy snow could fall at rates of an inch or more per hour in some areas.
Authorities warned that the accompanying cold will accelerate snow and ice buildup on roads, complicate cleanup efforts, and increase the risk of power outages. Residents in areas with significant accumulation could face extended travel disruptions and loss of heat if electricity is interrupted.
Officials urged communities to take precautionary measures, avoid non-essential travel, and prepare for rapidly changing winter conditions as the storm moves across the country.
