Jakarta, January 29, 2026 – The Europe Today: President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday delivered a series of directives to the newly inaugurated daily chair and members of Indonesia’s National Energy Council (DEN) at the State Palace in Jakarta, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening national energy sovereignty, security and self-sufficiency.
Addressing the council, the President instructed DEN to formulate a comprehensive strategy, including concrete measures to reduce Indonesia’s reliance on imported fuel.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, who was inaugurated as the daily chair of DEN, said the President outlined four key priorities for the council’s work.
“The first is energy sovereignty, where there must be no intervention from any party. The second is energy security. Currently, our energy reserves are sufficient for only 21 days, and we will increase this to three months by building storage facilities,” Lahadalia said.
He added that the third focus is strengthening energy independence, while the fourth is achieving energy self-sufficiency through a phased approach.
“We still import around 30 million kilolitres of fuel, both diesel and gasoline. Self-sufficiency will be implemented in stages, with the ultimate goal of achieving full energy independence,” he said.
Lahadalia also noted that the roadmap toward energy self-sufficiency has been completed and that the government is now outlining steps for international cooperation to support the strategy.
“We are starting to formulate collaboration with other countries, and the organisational structure is almost finalised. A presidential regulation is required and is currently being processed. We hope it can be completed soon,” he said.
During the ceremony, President Prabowo inaugurated Lahadalia as the daily chair of DEN, along with seven ministers as council members: Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, National Development Planning Minister Rachmat Pambudy, Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian Yuliarto, and Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
The President also inaugurated representatives from various sectors as DEN stakeholders. They include Johni Jonatan Numberi and Mohammad Fadhil Hasan from academia; Satya Widya Yudha and Sripeni Inten Cahyani from industry; Unggul Priyanto from the technology sector; Saleh Abdurrahman from the environmental sector; and Muhammad Kholid Syeirazi and Surono from the consumer sector.
Under the council’s structure, President Prabowo serves as chairperson, with Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka as deputy chairperson, while Lahadalia is responsible for the council’s day-to-day operations as daily chair.
The National Energy Council is expected to play a central role in shaping Indonesia’s long-term energy policy and ensuring sustainable, secure and independent energy supplies in line with the government’s development agenda.
