Baku, February 14, 2026 – The Europe Today: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation has been signed between AzerGold CJSC and the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (IGG) under the Ministry of Science, marking a new phase of strategic collaboration between the scientific and industrial sectors.
The document was signed by Zakir Ibrahimov, Chairman of the Executive Board of AzerGold CJSC, and IGG General Director, academician Akif Alizade.
The Memorandum represents a practical outcome of the strategic priorities articulated by Ilham Aliyev on enhancing the role of science in economic and industrial development. These priorities were emphasized during the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The agreement is expected to elevate cooperation between the two institutions to a qualitatively new level.
Under the MoU, the parties will expand scientific and technical collaboration, promote innovative approaches in subsoil exploration, and conduct comprehensive geological and geophysical studies of noble, non-ferrous, and ferrous metal ore deposits. The agreement also envisages strengthening specialized human capital in the mining sector and organizing consulting and advanced technical training services.
Particular focus will be placed on the study and assessment of gold mineralization in the Garabagh and East Zangezur economic regions, identified as priority areas of cooperation. The document further provides for comparative mineralogical and geochemical analyses of regional gold deposits, as well as the preparation of modern geological and tectonic maps using innovative technologies.
Officials noted that this is not the first cooperation framework between the two institutions. The initial MoU was signed in 2016, under which scientists from the institute developed scientifically substantiated approaches for the utilization of industrial waste in industry. The institute’s experts also served as consultants in AzerGold’s exploration projects.
Additionally, modern geological-genetic models for Azerbaijan’s gold deposits were developed within the earlier partnership and are currently being applied successfully by AzerGold geologists in forecasting and planning processes.
The renewed agreement is expected to further consolidate scientific expertise and industrial capacity, contributing to sustainable development and enhanced efficiency in Azerbaijan’s mining sector.
