Budapest, February 17, 2026 – The Europe Today: Hungary and the United States on Monday signed a civil nuclear energy cooperation agreement during a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to the Hungarian capital.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the agreement, alongside a sanctions-related exemption granted by the U.S. administration, would significantly enhance Hungary’s energy security and bolster its capacity to provide competitively priced energy to households and industry.
Orban emphasized that Hungary maintains an open and transparent approach in its relations with partners, including the United States, adding that any concerns can be resolved through direct dialogue.
Secretary Rubio noted that the nuclear cooperation agreement followed discussions held during a November meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Orban at the White House. He also confirmed that Washington had suspended certain sanctions measures affecting Hungary, enabling further advancement in bilateral energy collaboration.
The agreement marks a significant step in deepening strategic ties between Budapest and Washington, particularly in the field of civil nuclear energy and broader energy security cooperation.
