Dhaka, February 17, 2026 – The Europe Today: Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was sworn in on Tuesday as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh following his party’s decisive victory in the recent parliamentary elections.
The oath of office was administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin during a formal ceremony held in the capital, Dhaka. Alongside Rahman, 25 cabinet ministers and 24 state ministers were also sworn in as members of the new government.
Rahman was earlier elected leader of the BNP’s parliamentary party after the party secured a commanding majority in the Feb. 12 national elections. According to official results released by the Election Commission, the BNP won 209 seats in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament), enabling it to form the government independently.
The latest election represents Bangladesh’s first general vote since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned in August 2024 amid widespread political unrest across the country. The transition of power follows months of political uncertainty and heightened public demands for stability and reform.
In his inaugural remarks, Rahman pledged to prioritize economic recovery, democratic strengthening, and national unity, signaling the beginning of a new political chapter for Bangladesh under BNP leadership.
