Washington, February 28, 2026 – The Europe Today: U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that he would support the gradual lifting of sanctions against Russia if the conflict in Ukraine is brought to an end.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he would “very much like to see sanctions gradually lifted,” in response to questions about whether he seeks to ease restrictions on Moscow and expand trade and economic relations between Russia and the United States, according to media reports.
The U.S. leader emphasized that he is working toward a swift resolution of the Ukraine conflict. “And I would like to see it resolved quickly,” he said, referring to the ongoing crisis.
Trump also stated that he had spoken with Vladimir Putin and reiterated his desire to end the war. “I would like to see this war end. I spoke with President Vladimir Putin. I would like to see this war end,” he said.
However, he did not specify whether his remarks referred to any recent or new high-level contacts between Washington and Moscow.
The United States and its allies imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. Any potential easing of restrictions would likely depend on developments on the ground and diplomatic progress toward a negotiated settlement.
