Baku, March 5, 2026 – The Europe Today: Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Iranian drones carried out attacks on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on March 5, causing damage to infrastructure and injuring civilians.
According to an official statement from the ministry, one drone struck the terminal building at Nakhchivan International Airport, while another hit an area near a school in the village of Shekerabad. The attacks damaged parts of the airport facility and left two civilians injured, local media reported, citing the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
The ministry strongly condemned the drone strikes, stating that such actions violate international law and further escalate tensions in the region. Azerbaijan called on Iran to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, provide a detailed explanation, and take immediate measures to ensure that similar attacks do not occur in the future.
Baku also warned that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take appropriate measures in response to the attack.
Following the incident, Iran’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchilou, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where officials lodged a formal protest over the drone strikes.
