Italy Temporarily Closes Tehran Embassy, Relocates Staff to Baku Over Security Concerns

Italy

Rome, March 6, 2026 – The Europe Today: Italy has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran and relocated diplomatic staff to Azerbaijan due to security concerns amid rising regional tensions, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday.

Speaking to journalists at the Italian Senate, Tajani said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure.

“We have decided for security reasons to temporarily close our embassy in Tehran and move the personnel to Baku,” the minister stated.

His spokesman later confirmed the closure to AFP but clarified that the move does not signal a break in diplomatic relations with Iran.

Officials emphasized that the measure is temporary and aimed at ensuring the safety of diplomatic staff while the security situation in the region remains uncertain.

Italy continues to monitor developments closely and maintains diplomatic engagement with Tehran despite the temporary relocation of its embassy personnel to Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku.
