Seoul, March 10, 2026 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae Myung has sent a letter of appreciation to President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, thanking him for Turkmenistan’s assistance in evacuating South Korean nationals from Iran, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae reported on Monday, according to The Korea Times.
In the letter, President Lee stated that with the cooperation of Turkmen authorities, 25 South Korean citizens who had been in Iran, along with four Iranian family members of the Koreans, were able to safely cross the border last week and enter Turkmenistan.
Lee emphasized that Turkmenistan’s support during the evacuation demonstrated the strong friendship and mutual trust between the two countries.
According to reports, Turkmenistan also facilitated the entry of more than 200 people from 16 countries who crossed into its territory from neighboring Iran. Those evacuated included citizens from Central Asian states, China, Russia, the United States, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia.
The evacuation efforts were carried out amid heightened regional tensions, with Turkmenistan providing humanitarian support and safe passage for foreign nationals seeking to leave Iran.
