Germany Will Not Join Iran Conflict or Deploy Military to Strait of Hormuz, Says Chancellor Merz

Germany

Berlin, March 13, 2026 – The Europe Today: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that Germany has no intention of becoming involved in the ongoing conflict with Iran and does not plan to deploy military assets to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, according to media reports.

Speaking during a visit to Norway, Merz emphasized that Berlin sees no reason to consider providing military protection for vessels in the strategically important waterway, where Iranian attacks have recently been reported.

“Germany is not part of this war and we do not want to become part of it,” the German leader stated, underscoring his government’s position of avoiding direct involvement in the escalating tensions.

The Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route for global energy supplies, has witnessed rising security concerns in recent weeks amid regional tensions. However, the German government has reiterated that it does not intend to take part in military operations related to the conflict.

Merz’s remarks come as international attention remains focused on the safety of shipping lanes in the region and broader efforts to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
