Baku Initiative Group Pledges Continued Support for Sikh Resistance at Geneva Conference

Baku

Geneva, March 14, 2026 – The Europe Today: Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Sikh resistance and peoples living under what he described as colonial oppression.

Speaking on March 13 at the international conference titled “Countering Indian Transnational Repression: Sikh Resistance and United Nations” in Geneva, Abbasov stated that the Baku Initiative Group would continue to provide resolute and active support to communities striving for self-determination and justice.

The conference was held on the sidelines of the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, bringing together activists, researchers and international stakeholders to discuss concerns related to transnational repression and the rights of Sikh communities.

During his remarks, Abbasov emphasized the importance of raising international awareness about the challenges faced by communities seeking recognition and protection of their rights under international law. He stressed that the Baku Initiative Group remains committed to advocating for peoples who, according to the organization, continue to experience forms of political and colonial domination.

The event also provided a platform for participants to discuss the role of international institutions, particularly the United Nations, in addressing alleged cases of transnational repression and ensuring the protection of fundamental human rights.

Abbasov concluded by reiterating that the Baku Initiative Group will maintain its engagement with international forums and partners to support dialogue, awareness and advocacy on issues related to self-determination and human rights.
