Helsinki, March 16, 2026 – The Europe Today: Spring weather is advancing rapidly across Finland, with temperatures expected to climb close to 15°C later this week as sunny conditions return following a brief cooler spell.
According to Foreca meteorologist Kristian Roine, the mild conditions experienced over the weekend will largely continue in the coming days, although temperatures are expected to dip slightly before warming again toward the end of the week.
Over the weekend, southern and eastern Finland experienced unusually warm weather for early March as warm and dry air moved northward, bringing sunshine across large parts of the country.
The highest temperature on Saturday was recorded at Kalbådagrund in Porvoo, where the mercury reached 13.2°C, while Parikkala in eastern Finland recorded 12.5°C. By Sunday afternoon, temperatures climbed to 11°C in Tampere, with several other weather stations also reporting readings above 10°C.
The mild weather has significantly reduced snow cover across much of the country. Snow depth measurements on Sunday morning showed that large parts of southern and western Finland are already snow-free, with some areas experiencing a decrease of up to 20 centimeters of snow within a week.
However, northern Finland remains largely snow-covered. In Lapland, snow depths still range between 50 and 80 centimeters.
For the early part of the week, mostly dry conditions are expected across the country. On Monday and Tuesday, skies will alternate between cloudy and sunny, and most regions are likely to remain free from significant precipitation.
Forecasts indicate that a few light showers may occur in southern and central Finland late Monday and during Tuesday night, although rainfall amounts are expected to remain minimal.
On Wednesday, scattered rain and snow showers are forecast to move across northern Finland toward the east, while southern regions are expected to stay dry.
Daytime temperatures during the first half of the week are likely to remain around 5°C across much of Finland, though the sunniest areas in the south and center could see temperatures approaching 10°C.
Northern areas will remain cooler, with parts of Lapland potentially experiencing daytime temperatures below freezing, particularly on Monday.
During clear nights, frost is expected across much of the country, though temperatures are not forecast to drop to unusually low levels.
Weather conditions are expected to improve later in the week as a high-pressure system moves over Finland, bringing warmer air from the west.
Cloud cover is forecast to gradually decrease on Thursday, with sunny weather expected across most of the country on Friday and throughout the weekend.
The period is expected to remain largely dry, although light rain or sleet may occur in the far north of Lapland.
Temperatures are forecast to rise steadily, with southern and central Finland likely to experience daytime readings above 10°C. According to the latest forecasts, the warmest day could be Sunday, when temperatures in some areas may approach 15°C.
Roine noted that the improving weather conditions will likely accelerate the spring thaw across southern parts of Finland in the coming days.
