Moscow, March 22, 2026 – The Europe Today: Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a total of 283 Ukrainian fixed-wing kamikaze drones overnight, marking one of the largest such aerial engagements in recent weeks.
According to Russian officials, the drones were downed across multiple regions, including Bryansk, Smolensk, Kaluga, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, Volgograd, Tula, Ryazan, Kursk, Saratov, Samara, Tatarstan, Crimea, and the Moscow region.
Widespread Interceptions Across Regions
The ministry said many of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were heading toward Moscow and surrounding areas, but were successfully intercepted before reaching their intended targets.
Earlier in the day, Saratov Governor Roman Busargin reported that a drone strike caused minor damage in the city of Engels, located across the Volga River from Saratov.
“Several houses in Engels had their windows partially broken. There were no casualties, according to the preliminary evaluation. All emergency services are working at the scene,” he said.
Additional Drones Downed
Later updates from the defense ministry indicated that an additional 54 drones were shot down across western and southwestern regions, suggesting the scale of the aerial assault continued throughout the day.
Damage and Incident Footage
Footage circulating online appeared to show a damaged Ukrainian drone—identified as an An-196 “Luty” long-range kamikaze UAV—crashing into parked vehicles after reportedly being struck by air defenses. The incident caused minor damage to at least three vehicles and sparked a small fire, though no casualties were reported.
Escalation in Drone Warfare
The reported barrage comes amid a broader escalation in drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have increasingly relied on long-range UAV strikes targeting infrastructure and strategic sites deep داخل Russian territory.
Moscow has described these attacks as attempts to offset battlefield setbacks, while maintaining that its own retaliatory strikes are directed at military and dual-use infrastructure rather than civilian targets.
Ongoing Conflict Dynamics
The latest developments highlight the intensifying use of drone technology in the conflict, with both sides expanding their capabilities and reach. The situation remains fluid, with continued exchanges expected as the conflict evolves.
