U.S. Weighs Deploying 82nd Airborne Brigade for Potential Iran Operations, No Orders Issued Yet

Washington, March 24, 2026 – The Europe Today: Senior United States military officials are reportedly considering the deployment of a combat brigade from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, along with elements of its headquarters, to support potential operations related to Iran, according to defence sources.

Officials stressed that the planning remains precautionary in nature, with no formal deployment orders issued by the Pentagon or U.S. Central Command, both of which declined to comment. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity, according to media reports.

The proposed deployment would involve troops from the 82nd Airborne Division’s “Immediate Response Force,” a highly mobile brigade of approximately 3,000 soldiers capable of deploying globally within 18 hours. One potential operational scenario under consideration includes securing Kharg Island, Iran’s primary oil export hub.

Another option being discussed involves approximately 2,500 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is already en route to the region. Military experts suggest that Marine units could be deployed first due to their engineering capabilities, particularly in repairing airfield infrastructure on Kharg Island reportedly damaged in recent U.S. airstrikes.

Once operational, the airfield could facilitate the arrival of additional personnel and supplies via Air Force C-130 aircraft. In such a scenario, 82nd Airborne forces could reinforce and eventually relieve Marine units following initial operations.

Analysts note that while airborne troops offer rapid deployment capability, they lack heavy armored support for sustained engagements. In contrast, Marine forces provide immediate assault and engineering capacity but have limited long-term sustainment capability, making a combined operational approach more viable.

The potential deployment would also include a headquarters element from the division to oversee mission planning and coordination in what officials describe as an increasingly complex operational environment. Earlier this month, the Army reportedly canceled a scheduled exercise involving around 300 headquarters personnel at Fort Polk, Louisiana, keeping the unit on standby at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The 82nd Airborne Division’s Immediate Response Force has previously been deployed on short notice in several high-profile operations, including the Middle East in 2020 following the Baghdad embassy attack, Afghanistan in 2021 during evacuation efforts, and Eastern Europe in 2022 amid the Ukraine crisis.

While no final decision has been announced, the developments underscore heightened preparedness by U.S. forces amid rising tensions in the region.
