Kuala Lumpur, April 3, 2026 – The Europe Today: Turkmenistan has expressed readiness to expand trade and economic cooperation with Malaysia, with a particular focus on the agricultural sector, including the establishment of joint ventures and the adoption of advanced technologies.
The announcement was made by Turkmenistan’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Muhammetniyaz Mashalov, during a meeting with Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Haji Mohamad bin Sabu.
According to the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Malaysia, both sides explored opportunities to enhance cooperation through the introduction of digital technologies and precision farming systems aimed at boosting agricultural productivity. Discussions also covered seed production, livestock breeding, the cultivation of drought-resistant crops, modernization of irrigation systems, and efficient water resource management.
The two countries further emphasized the importance of simplifying phytosanitary and veterinary procedures to facilitate smoother agricultural trade.
Toward formal cooperation
The meeting concluded with a proposal to prepare a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the respective agriculture ministries of both countries, laying the groundwork for structured and long-term collaboration.
Minister Haji Mohamad bin Sabu highlighted that bilateral trade and economic relations between Malaysia and Turkmenistan have been progressing steadily, underpinned by positive diplomatic ties. He stressed the need to further intensify cooperation in agriculture and proposed expanding mutual imports and exports of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Focus on sustainability and innovation
The discussions also underscored the importance of environmentally friendly production methods and the development of export logistics, aligning with global trends toward sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems.
In addition, the Turkmen side invited Malaysian experts to participate in the upcoming international exhibitions — Agro Pack Turkmenistan 2026 and Food Turkmenistan 2026 — scheduled to take place from May 12 to 14, 2026, in Ashgabat.
The planned events are expected to serve as key platforms for showcasing innovations, fostering partnerships, and strengthening international cooperation in the agro-industrial sector.
