Baku, April 6, 2026 – The Europe Today: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has reiterated the country’s firm stance on the sovereignty of its Garabagh region, calling on Russia to refrain from making public remarks on matters related to Azerbaijan’s internal affairs.
In a statement issued in response to recent comments by Russian officials, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that issues concerning the Garabagh region had been raised during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held in Moscow on April 1, as well as in subsequent public discussions.
The ministry emphasized that it had already conveyed, through diplomatic channels, its position on the inadmissibility of using the Garabagh region for political speculation, urging the cessation of such references in official discourse.
The statement also referred to remarks made by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov in an interview, where he commented on the recognition of the Garabagh region as part of Azerbaijan.
“Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over the Garabagh region is not based on the decision of any individual state, but on history, international law, and justice,” the ministry said, noting that this position was reaffirmed following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War and subsequent developments in 2023.
The Foreign Ministry further underscored that no country, including Russia, has ever questioned Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, including the Garabagh region.
Reiterating its expectations, Baku called on the Russian side to avoid making Azerbaijan’s sovereignty a subject of public discourse, particularly amid the complexities in Russian-Armenian relations.
The statement reflects Azerbaijan’s continued emphasis on safeguarding its territorial integrity and maintaining clear boundaries in diplomatic engagement.
