Kupang, April 6, 2026 – The Europe Today: Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Monday called on Indonesians to uphold national unity and strengthen interfaith tolerance in the face of rising global tensions linked to conflicts in the Middle East.

Speaking during a visit to Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), the vice president emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and cohesion in a diverse society. “As a diverse nation, we must maintain unity and peace while upholding tolerance,” he stated.

Gibran delivered the remarks while inaugurating the 30th Easter Parade Festival organized by the Evangelical Christian Church in Timor, urging citizens to respect differences in culture and religion.

He cautioned the public against falling prey to misinformation and unverified content circulating on social media platforms, stressing the need for timely intervention when misunderstandings arise. “We must act quickly to mediate, clarify and find common ground,” he said.

Highlighting the role of collective responsibility, the vice president urged all segments of society to work together to preserve harmony, describing it as essential for national development. He warned that no country can progress under conditions of instability, division, or social fragmentation.

Gibran also commended GMIT for its continued efforts in promoting peace and tolerance across NTT and beyond, noting that such initiatives play a vital role in strengthening social cohesion nationwide.

He further underscored the broader implications of global conflicts, pointing out that even countries not directly involved in wars can face economic and social repercussions. “Conflict brings setbacks and significant costs, both for those involved and for others,” he said.

The vice president stressed that maintaining domestic stability would enable Indonesia to better withstand external pressures, while also emphasizing the importance of public awareness in countering divisive narratives.

At the conclusion of the event, Gibran symbolically handed over a torch to participants of the Easter parade, reinforcing a message of peace and unity amid ongoing global challenges.
