Ukraine, Syria Agree to Reopen Embassies, Boost Cooperation Across Key Sectors

Syria

Damascus, April 6, 2026 – The Europe Today:  Ukraine and Syria have agreed to reopen their embassies in Kyiv and Damascus in the near future, marking a significant step toward restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the development following talks in Damascus with his Syrian counterpart Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani. The discussions covered a broad range of areas, including security, logistics, trade, and food security.

Sybiha highlighted that bilateral trade between Ukraine and Syria has increased ninefold since the signing of a joint communique in September 2025 to restore diplomatic ties, noting strong potential for further expansion.

Both sides agreed to continue working together to promote a “lasting peace” for their peoples, with Sybiha emphasizing the interconnected nature of regional stability. “The security of Europe and the Middle East is interlinked,” he stated.

The ministers also discussed enhancing logistics and developing trade and maritime routes to deepen economic cooperation. Food security featured prominently in the talks, with Ukraine expressing readiness to contribute through initiatives such as Grain from Ukraine to support regional stability.

In addition, humanitarian and educational cooperation were addressed, with Sybiha noting that Syrian students have long studied in Ukraine, forming a solid foundation for future collaboration.

Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa during his first official visit to Damascus. The two leaders agreed to enhance cooperation aimed at improving security and expanding development opportunities in both countries.

Zelenskyy said the meeting covered regional developments, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, and Ukraine’s role as a reliable global food supplier. He also highlighted joint opportunities to strengthen food security and address Syria’s energy and infrastructure challenges.

Ukraine had severed diplomatic relations with Syria in 2022 after Damascus recognized the Russian-backed breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. The latest agreement signals a renewed effort by both countries to rebuild ties and expand cooperation across multiple sectors.
