Vietnam National Assembly Re-elects Trần Thanh Mẫn as Chairman for 16th Term

Hanoi, April 7, 2026 – The Europe Today: The National Assembly of Vietnam has unanimously re-elected Trần Thanh Mẫn as Chairman of the National Assembly of the Vietnam for its 16th term, reaffirming continuity in the country’s legislative leadership.

The decision was made during the opening session of the first sitting of the 16th National Assembly, held Monday morning at the National Assembly House in Hanoi. Lawmakers convened a closed session to deliberate on personnel matters, including the election of the Chairman.

The Assembly subsequently adopted a resolution endorsing Trần Thanh Mẫn’s re-election with unanimous support. A total of 491 out of 491 delegates present voted in favor, accounting for 98.2 percent of the full membership.

Under the resolution, Trần Thanh Mẫn, a member of the Politburo and Chairman of the 15th National Assembly, will continue to serve in the same capacity for the 16th term. The resolution took immediate effect upon its adoption.

Following the vote, Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn took the oath of office before the Assembly, pledging absolute loyalty to the Fatherland, the people, and the Constitution, and committing to fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to him by the Party, the State, and the public.

Born on August 12, 1962, in Hậu Giang Province, Trần Thanh Mẫn is of Kinh ethnicity and joined the Communist Party in 1982. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political theory and a doctorate in economics.

He is a member of the 13th and 14th Politburo and has served on the Party Central Committee across multiple terms. Over the years, he has held several senior positions, including President of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front from 2017 to 2021 and Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly from 2021 to 2024.

Trần Thanh Mẫn was first elected Chairman of the National Assembly during the seventh sitting of the 15th legislature in May 2024 and has since played a key role in guiding Vietnam’s legislative agenda.
