Bomb Threat Forces Evacuation of Basel-Mulhouse Airport, Operations Resume Quickly

Basel-Mulhouse, July 26, 2024, The Europe Today: French police evacuated Basel-Mulhouse Airport on Friday due to an alleged bomb threat, causing a temporary disruption in flight operations.

“For safety reasons, the terminal had to be evacuated and is currently closed,” the Basel-Mulhouse EuroAirport announced on its website. Shortly after, the airport confirmed, “The airport has reopened and flight operations are gradually restarting.”

French officials informed the AFP news agency that bomb-disposal experts were on site to ensure the safety of the airport.

The EuroAirport, located just a few kilometers from the Swiss and German borders, handled eight million passengers last year, making it a significant air traffic hub in the region.

Olympic Games Raise the Stakes

The bomb scare at Basel-Mulhouse Airport occurred just hours after a massive attack on the French rail network and mere hours before the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

While no direct connection has been established between the security incident at Basel-Mulhouse and the other events, tensions are running high in France. With the country welcoming athletes and visitors from around the world, there are heightened fears that terror groups could target the high-profile event.

Authorities are on high alert, ensuring the safety of all involved as France hosts the global sporting spectacle.
