Moscow, October 1, 2024 – The Europe Today: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has criticized Germany’s decision to arrest a couple accused of broadcasting Russian TV channels via the internet, calling it a questionable way to observe the International Day for Universal Access to Information, celebrated annually on September 28.
Lavrov made the remarks during a press conference at the UN, highlighting that the couple was taken into custody on suspicion of distributing Russian media content, which has been banned in the EU since March 2022 due to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.
German authorities allege that the couple provided access to sanctioned Russian TV channels through an IP-TV service, leading to a police raid in Karlsruhe and the seizure of technical equipment and €40,000 in cash. The couple now faces charges under the Foreign Trade Act and could face at least one year in prison if found guilty. The investigation is ongoing.
