Turkiye Condemns Israeli Attacks on UNIFIL

Ankara, October 14, 2024 – The Europe Today: The Turkish Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned Israel’s attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and expressed concerns over Israel’s potential plans to extend its occupation beyond Gaza into Lebanon.

In an official statement, the ministry emphasized the crucial role UNIFIL plays in maintaining regional security, particularly in light of Israel’s recent deadly attacks on Lebanon. The ministry warned that Israel’s actions indicate a broader intention to escalate the conflict across the region.

“The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was deployed to contribute to the security of the region. The role of UNIFIL is even more important given Israel’s motive to spread the war across the region,” the statement read.

The ministry further criticized Israel’s continuous attacks on UNIFIL, describing them as evidence of the Israeli government’s policy of occupation under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “Israel’s regular attacks on UNIFIL are a clear demonstration of its willingness to use military force in any situation to further its occupation agenda in Lebanon,” the statement continued.

Ankara called for a united international response, urging all nations, particularly members of the UN Security Council, to take a firm stand against Israeli aggression and the countries supplying arms to Israel. “Each member of the UN Security Council has an obligation to prevent Israeli attacks against the UN forces they themselves deploy,” the ministry stated.

Turkey’s call comes amidst growing concerns over escalating tensions in the region and the potential for further destabilization.
