Russia Successfully Tests Hypersonic Oreshnik Missile in Response to US Deployment

Moscow, December 29, 2024 – The Europe Today: Russia’s successful testing of the hypersonic Oreshnik missile last month marks a direct response to the United States’ deployment of mid-range rockets in Europe, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The Oreshnik missile system, capable of carrying multiple warheads, including nuclear ones, was first deployed on November 21, striking Ukraine’s Yuzhmash military industrial facility in Dnepr. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the missile’s warheads travel at ten times the speed of sound, rendering them invulnerable to existing air defense systems.

In an interview on Sunday, Lavrov highlighted that Russia initially adhered to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, even after the US unilaterally withdrew from the Cold War-era accord in 2019. However, he noted that Russia’s self-imposed moratorium on deploying intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles is no longer viable.

Lavrov criticized Washington for disregarding appeals from Moscow and Beijing to refrain from deploying mid-range rockets overseas. In light of these developments, Lavrov stated that Russia was compelled to act. “The recent test of the newest mid-range supersonic Oreshnik system, conducted under combat conditions, convincingly demonstrates our capabilities and determination to take compensatory measures,” he explained.

The Russian foreign minister accused the US of undermining strategic stability, stating, “As a result of the US’ destructive policy, the foundations of strategic stability have been considerably shaken, and in some areas destroyed.” He added that Moscow has no intention of re-engaging in arms control dialogue with Washington in the near future, citing the US’ “extremely anti-Russian” stance.

While Russia continues to adhere to certain limits outlined in previous agreements, Lavrov emphasized that Moscow reserves the right to adjust its policies in response to evolving threats posed by the US and NATO allies.

President Putin recently affirmed that while the number of Oreshnik systems remains limited, Russia is prepared to deploy them as needed. Additionally, he confirmed that several units would be stationed in Belarus, a close ally of Russia.

The development of the Oreshnik missile, according to Putin, is a direct countermeasure to the US decision to station medium-range missiles in Western Europe. This hypersonic weapon system underscores Moscow’s resolve to maintain strategic parity amid rising tensions with the West.
