Indonesia, Russia Agree to Deepen Strategic Cooperation in Digital and Communication Sectors

Jakarta, April 16, 2025 — The Europe Today: Indonesia and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering strategic cooperation in the fields of communication and digital technology, further consolidating 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The agreement was highlighted during a bilateral meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday (April 15) between Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, and Russia’s Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Communication, and Mass Communication, Andrey Zarenin.

Deputy Minister Patria emphasized that the collaboration spans a broad range of areas, including the development of 5G networks, broadband expansion, digital ecosystems, e-commerce, postal services, and emerging digital technologies.

“We are open to cooperation in various possibilities, including telecommunications, digital ecosystems, e-commerce, postal services, and emerging technologies,” said Patria following the meeting.

He underscored Indonesia’s growing interest in improving international digital connectivity, notably through the expansion of bandwidth capacity for global internet and data transmission.

“In Indonesia, we aspire to provide fast internet services at affordable prices, similar to Russia, where users can enjoy speeds of 100 Mbps for under US$4,” Patria added.

Previous collaboration between the two countries has included training programs for Indonesian state civil servants (ASN) in digital skills and the organization of public lectures at several Indonesian universities.

Patria also expressed Indonesia’s desire to expand cooperation in the media sector to foster greater information exchange and to support digital literacy and skills development.

“We hope this meeting can generate an initiative to create a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Indonesia and Russia to emphasize the commitment to digital development and also the media,” he said.

Deputy Minister Zarenin, for his part, conveyed Russia’s readiness to enhance digital synergy with Indonesia through the sharing of technological expertise and the establishment of an Indonesia–Russia Joint Commission for Information Technology and Digital Society.

“I see the future of Indonesia–Russia relations and its wider opportunities,” Zarenin remarked.

He also highlighted the potential for cooperation with Russian technology firms, particularly in advancing fiber optic backbone infrastructure and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technologies.

“I am sure we will initiate important agreements in information technology and media between governments and companies,” Zarenin concluded.

The meeting marks a significant step toward deeper digital engagement between Indonesia and Russia, reinforcing a shared vision of technological innovation and mutual progress in the digital age.
