Erdogan, NATO Chief Rutte Discuss Ukraine Peace Process in Phone Call

Ankara, August 20, 2025 – The Europe Today: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte held a phone conversation on Tuesday evening to discuss the latest developments in the peace process between Russia and Ukraine, Türkiye’s Communications Directorate announced on the social media platform NSosyal.

According to the statement, Secretary General Rutte called President Erdogan while returning from a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump and European Union leaders.

During the discussion, the two leaders agreed on maintaining close coordination and emphasized Türkiye’s crucial role in the Ukraine peace process “as one of NATO’s most important members.”

They also underscored Ankara’s strategic importance in ensuring security in the Black Sea region. Additionally, the leaders exchanged views on viable and sustainable security guarantees.
