Astana, September 15, 2025 — The Europe Today: The Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is developing a national water assessment information system aimed at improving the management and transparency of the country’s water resources, according to media reports.

The system will compile data on surface and underground waters, hydraulic structures, and other water management facilities. In the future, it is expected to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite monitoring technologies to determine Kazakhstan’s water balance, assess the actual needs of the population and economy, and enhance monitoring and analysis of water use.

The project, funded by the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB), is set to be completed by the end of 2026. Upon completion, the system will serve as a digital platform for integrated surface and groundwater resource accounting and management. It is expected to raise efficiency in addressing water shortages, improve forecasting, and support rapid response in emergency situations.

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov has instructed the heads of subordinate organizations to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data included in the system.
