Jakarta, October 23, 2025 — The Europe Today: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva praised Indonesia as a strategic partner in strengthening solidarity among developing nations of the Global South and enhancing their collective influence on the international stage.
“Indonesia stands as a crucial, strategic partner for Brazil in our efforts to solidify the position of Global South countries,” President Lula stated during a one-on-one meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday.
President Lula underscored Brazil’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Indonesia, particularly in expanding cooperation in trade and education. Acknowledging Indonesia’s growing economic strength, he expressed enthusiasm to foster a more dynamic and mutually beneficial trade partnership between the two nations.
In the field of education, the Brazilian leader proposed increased collaboration between universities in both countries, emphasizing the importance of academic exchange and policy coordination to promote equitable trade relations.
“We need to bolster ties between our universities and, most importantly, forge policies supporting balanced trade between both countries,” Lula remarked.
He also extended appreciation to President Prabowo for his visit to the Planalto Palace in Brasília on July 9 this year, noting that their previous discussions had strengthened mutual understanding and paved the way for closer cooperation.
President Lula highlighted that the Brasília meeting came at a crucial moment, as Brazil assumed the 2025 BRICS presidency and welcomed Indonesia as a new member of the economic bloc following its accession in January this year. He expressed confidence that Indonesia’s participation in BRICS would further amplify the collective voice of the Global South in international forums.
The Brazilian president voiced optimism about elevating the long-standing partnership between Indonesia and Brazil, built on mutual respect and shared goals, to new heights for the benefit of both nations.
“I am truly delighted to be here and hopeful that we will continue to strengthen the ties between Brazil and Indonesia,” Lula said.
President Lula was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro, Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira, and Central Bank President Gabriel Galípolo.
On the Indonesian side, President Prabowo was joined by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoedin, and Trade Minister Budi Santoso, among others.
