Trump Challenges Maine Decision Excluding Him from Primary Ballot Amid Capitol Attack Fallout

New York, January 02, 2024, The Europe Today: Former US President Donald Trump lodged an appeal on Tuesday against the decision of Shenna Bellows, Maine’s Secretary of State and a Democrat, who had excluded him from the state’s Republican presidential primary ballot. The exclusion was made under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits individuals who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office.

Bellows, in her decision, highlighted the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, asserting that it transpired with the knowledge and support of the outgoing President. She concluded that Trump, by inciting an insurrection to retain power after the 2020 election, was disqualified from seeking office again in accordance with constitutional provisions. Trump’s appeal challenges this ruling, setting the stage for legal deliberations over his eligibility in the state’s primary.
