Accra, March 01, 2024, The Europe Today: In a significant milestone, Ghanaian Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia officially inaugurated the main venue for the upcoming 13th African Games on Friday. The state-of-the-art University of Ghana Sports Stadium, boasting an impressive 11,000-seat capacity, will serve as the primary hub for the continental sporting extravaganza scheduled to commence later this month.
Equipped with world-class facilities catering to all track and field events, the University of Ghana Sports Stadium will not only host the thrilling competitions but will also be the venue for the grand opening and closing ceremonies of the Games.
Vice President Bawumia highlighted the remarkable journey of Ghana in preparing for this historic event. Acknowledging that the country initially lacked sufficient infrastructure when granted the opportunity to host the African Games, he emphasized the tremendous effort and dedication invested to build the necessary facilities. The completion of the University of Ghana Sports Stadium marks a pivotal achievement, reflecting Ghana’s commitment to fulfilling its dream of hosting the African Games for the first time.
“When Ghana received the green light to host the Games, it had inadequate infrastructure, which placed enormous responsibility on the country to build more infrastructure to make the dream of hosting its first-ever African Games possible,” stated Vice President Bawumia during the commissioning ceremony.
Expressing pride in the nation’s accomplishments, Bawumia highlighted the tireless work undertaken to ensure the completion of the necessary infrastructure ahead of the Games, scheduled to kick off in just a week.
“The commissioning of the University of Ghana Sports Stadium is another giant step by Ghana, which indicates our preparedness to host the African Games in just a few days,” he affirmed.
This development follows President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s February commissioning of a major sports complex dedicated to the Games, further underlining Ghana’s commitment to providing world-class facilities for the multi-sport event.
The 13th African Games are set to commence next Friday in the Ghanaian capital of Accra, with the picturesque coastal city of Cape Coast hosting various events, promising a celebration of sport, unity, and African excellence.
