Leaders Congratulate Signing of Landmark China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway Agreement

Beijing, June 06, 2024, The Europe Today: On Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev congratulated the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project via video link.

President Xi highlighted the strategic importance of the railway as a crucial connectivity project between China and Central Asia, and as a landmark initiative under the Belt and Road framework. “The signing of the intergovernmental agreement provides a solid legal basis for the construction of the project, marking the transition of the railway from a vision into a reality,” Xi stated. He emphasized that this move demonstrates the firm determination of the three countries to promote cooperation and seek mutual development.

China is committed to working closely with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to expedite the launch and construction of this strategic corridor, Xi added, stressing its anticipated benefits for the economic and social development of the region.

President Japarov described the railway as a flagship project for the three countries within the Belt and Road Initiative. He noted that once completed, the railway would establish a new transport route connecting Asia to Europe and the Persian Gulf, significantly enhancing connectivity and economic exchanges among the countries along its path and within the broader region. “We hope the railway will be completed and operational soon, providing new impetus for regional development and the well-being of people in all countries,” Japarov said.

President Mirziyoyev remarked on the historic significance of the signing ceremony, viewing it as a substantial step towards strengthening regional connectivity. He pointed out that the railway will be the shortest land route between China and Central Asian countries, opening access to major markets in South Asia and the Middle East. “This project will help expand cooperation with China, deepen friendly relations within the region, and serve the long-term interests of all involved countries,” Mirziyoyev concluded.

The leaders’ remarks underscore the collective commitment to advancing this strategic infrastructure project, which promises to enhance regional integration and economic growth under the Belt and Road Initiative.
