Kyiv, July 01, 2024, The Europe Today: Ukrainian authorities have reported thwarting an attempt to replace the government in Kyiv. The SBU intelligence service and prosecutors revealed on Monday that a group had planned to stage “provocations” in Ukraine’s capital on Sunday, coinciding with the country’s Constitution Day celebrations.
The plot included the occupation of parliament during a demonstration and the “removal from power” of the current government. Four men are currently under investigation, with two in custody, according to the report.
Weapons and ammunition were discovered during raids conducted as part of the investigation. The suspects, if found guilty, could face up to 10 years in prison. The investigation is being led by authorities in Ivano-Frankivsk, located in the west of the country.
This incident follows a previous report in May, where the SBU uncovered a network of Russian agents plotting to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Meanwhile, officials in Russian regions bordering Ukraine have reported power cuts and water problems following Ukrainian drone attacks.
The Ukrainian authorities’ swift action underscores the ongoing threats to the country’s stability amidst the broader conflict with Russia.
