Vietnamese and Lao Leaders Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Vientiane, July 12, 2024, The Europe Today: Vietnamese President Tô Lâm and Chairman of the Lao National Assembly Saysomphone Phomvihane on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.

During their meeting in Vientiane, part of President Lâm’s ongoing state visit, the leaders emphasized that their bilateral relationship is an invaluable asset and a vital factor for each country’s revolutionary cause.

Chairman Phomvihane highlighted that President Lâm’s visit demonstrates the strong friendship and fraternity between the Vietnamese Party, State, and people towards Laos. He requested that President Lâm extend an invitation to National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn to pay an official visit to Laos.

President Lâm expressed his gratitude for the goodwill and valuable sentiments of the Lao Party, State, and people towards Vietnam. He congratulated Laos on its achievements in national construction and development and expressed confidence that Laos would overcome current challenges to successfully implement the resolutions of the 11th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and the 9th five-year socio-economic development plan. He also mentioned the smooth organization of all-level Party congresses and the upcoming 12th National Party Congress.

Chairman Phomvihane requested that President Lâm convey his regards to Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng and other high-ranking Vietnamese leaders. He appreciated the support from the Vietnamese Party, State, and people during Laos’s past struggle for national independence and their current efforts in national construction and development.

Both leaders noted with satisfaction the thriving relations between their countries and legislatures. They stressed the importance of maintaining regular delegation exchanges and contacts, actively implementing cooperation agreements between the two National Assemblies, and organizing meetings and workshops to share experiences. They also emphasized the need for close coordination and mutual support at regional and international inter-parliamentary forums.

President Lâm commended Laos for hosting the first Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Parliamentary Summit in Vientiane in December 2023. He affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to assist Laos in its external activities, including its 2024 ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Chairmanship.

The meeting underscored the enduring partnership between Vietnam and Laos and their shared commitment to deepening bilateral ties for mutual benefit.
