Washington, August 03, 2024, The Europe Today: US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has authorized the deployment of navy cruisers and destroyers to the Middle East region, the Pentagon announced today, in response to escalating regional tensions following recent high-profile assassinations.
The Pentagon also revealed plans to deploy an additional squadron of fighter jets and land-based missile defense systems to bolster the US presence in the area.
This strategic move comes as the United States prepares for potential retaliatory actions by Iran and its allies, following the recent assassinations of key figures linked to Hamas and Hezbollah. On August 2, 2024, Hamas peace negotiator Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran, and a senior Hezbollah official was assassinated in Beirut, actions that have intensified the already volatile situation amid ongoing hostilities in Gaza.
Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh stated, “Secretary Austin informed the minister of additional measures, including ongoing and future defensive force posture changes that the department will undertake to support the defense of Israel.” She further emphasized, “Secretary Austin and President Biden have committed to bolstering our force protection in the region, aligning with Prime Minister Netanyahu’s requests.”
The increased military presence aims to reinforce security and stability in the region, providing support to allied nations and protecting US interests amidst the heightened conflict. The US military’s enhanced readiness is intended to deter further escalation and provide a defensive posture in the face of potential threats.
The situation in the Middle East remains highly fluid, and these measures reflect the United States’ commitment to ensuring regional security and supporting its allies during this critical period.
