Bandar Seri Begawan, August 21, 2024, The Europe Today: The diplomatic community in Brunei Darussalam expressed their delight in continuing the tradition of hosting a reception in honor of His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s birthday. German Ambassador to Brunei, Gerda Winkler, emphasized that the event also celebrates the strong diplomatic ties between their countries and the Sultanate.
In her speech, Ambassador Winkler congratulated His Majesty on the 40th anniversary of Brunei’s independence, as well as the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations with numerous countries that have missions in Brunei. She praised the Sultan for his successful foreign visits over the past year, and highlighted Brunei’s diplomatic achievements, particularly its steadfast support for ASEAN’s goals and the upholding of the association’s centrality.
The ambassador specifically noted the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change in Bandar Seri Begawan as a significant contribution by Brunei to the regional organization. She expressed that the diplomatic missions look forward to supporting this initiative.
Ambassador Winkler also expressed her appreciation for Brunei’s commitment to the international rule of law, the principles of the United Nations Charter, and the ASEAN Charter. She commended Brunei’s efforts in tackling climate change and protecting biodiversity.
Concluding her remarks, Ambassador Winkler extended her best wishes to His Majesty and the royal family for good health, long life, and continued happiness.
Following her speech, the ambassador presented His Majesty with a gift on behalf of the diplomatic corps—a marble gold leaf flower vase sourced from India. The Sultan and members of the royal entourage then met with the heads of diplomatic missions and their spouses before departing the venue.
Currently, 29 countries maintain resident diplomatic missions in Brunei, working to build cooperation, friendship, and mutually beneficial relations with the Sultanate.
