Beijing, October 2, 2024 – The Europe Today: Carlos Alcaraz captured his first-ever China Open title on Wednesday after defeating top seed Jannik Sinner in a thrilling three-hour-and-21-minute match. The 21-year-old Spaniard staged a remarkable comeback, overturning a one-set deficit to claim his 16th ATP tour singles title with a final score of 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (3).
In a dramatic final-set tiebreak, Alcaraz, trailing 3-0, mounted an extraordinary fightback by winning seven consecutive points, dashing Sinner’s hopes of defending his title in Beijing. The victory not only snapped Sinner’s unbeaten streak but also made Alcaraz the second Spaniard, after Rafael Nadal, to win the China Open men’s singles championship.
Reflecting on the intense match, Alcaraz said, “I believe these kinds of matches will attract more people to tennis, and maybe even inspire them to play.” He also expressed gratitude to his team, sharing how hard they worked to regain his form after a challenging period following the American swing. “We’ve been working really hard on and off the court to feel this moment again,” he added.
On the women’s side, Chinese favorite Zheng Qinwen showcased her resilience, rallying from one set down to defeat Amanda Anisimova of the United States 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Zheng will now face Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals, who convincingly beat Poland’s Magda Linette 6-1, 6-3.
In other women’s matches, world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka secured her place in the quarterfinals by overcoming Madison Keys 6-4, 6-3. Sabalenka will face Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, who defeated Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in straight sets.
