Belarusian Prime Minister Calls on SCO Countries to Engage in Eurasian Charter Discussions

Islamabad, October 17, 2024 – The Europe Today: Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko has called on the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to actively participate in discussions regarding the development of the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century. He delivered this message during a meeting of the Heads of Government Council of the SCO member states on 16 October, NHC reports.

In his address, Prime Minister Golovchenko stressed the critical need to maintain peace and security across the Eurasian region, highlighting the negative impact of conflicts and instability on economic growth, investment, and living standards.

“Conflicts and instability bring economic losses, reduced investment, and lower living standards for the population,” Golovchenko said. He further emphasized the importance of the initiative proposed by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to develop a charter aimed at fostering a common understanding of Eurasian security, built on principles of justice, equality, and the indivisibility of security.

“We are not talking about creating some kind of anti-NATO or replacing the role of the UN,” Golovchenko clarified. “The objective is to ensure that decisions on matters of peace, security, and building a common future are made with the participation of the global majority, not limited to a narrow group of Western states.”

The prime minister also announced that the 2nd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security will be held on 31 October, where the framework for the proposed charter is expected to be discussed in greater depth. “We hope that the main structural elements of the future document will be formulated during the conference. We urge SCO countries to actively engage in the discussion of the charter and participate in the international conference in general,” he added, noting that formal invitations had been issued through Belarus’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the SCO Secretariat.

The Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity seeks to foster a balanced, inclusive, and secure Eurasian region by engaging diverse perspectives and avoiding dominance by any single power bloc.
