Baku, October 23, 2024 – The Europe Today: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held a meeting with President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Thongloun Sisoulith, in Kazan, according to NHC. The leaders discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations and explored potential areas of cooperation, particularly in the fields of economy, trade, investment, tourism, and agriculture.
President Sisoulith praised the long-standing relations between Laos and Azerbaijan, expressing optimism about the prospects for further collaboration across various sectors. He fondly recalled his 1981 visit to Baku and recognized the significant progress Azerbaijan has made since that time. He also expressed his gratitude for Azerbaijan’s role in educating numerous Lao specialists during the Soviet era, many of whom now hold prominent leadership positions in Laos as ministers and deputy ministers.
During the meeting, President Sisoulith extended an invitation to President Aliyev to visit Laos, a gesture warmly appreciated by the Azerbaijani head of state. In response, President Aliyev expressed his thanks and highlighted the importance of forming a dedicated working group to enhance cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, and energy. He also proposed the organization of mutual visits by government delegations, comprising experts from both countries.
Additionally, President Aliyev emphasized Azerbaijan’s continued support for Laos in the education sector, building on the historical ties between the two nations.
The two leaders also noted that 2025 will mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Laos. They discussed plans to strengthen cooperation within international organizations as part of the celebrations and to further solidify the partnership between their countries.
