Lima, November 17, 2024 – The Europe Today: Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized four critical “red lines” in China-U.S. relations, underscoring that these must not be challenged or crossed, during a key meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Peru, on Saturday.
In his remarks, Xi highlighted that the Taiwan issue, democracy and human rights, China’s developmental path and system, and China’s development rights are non-negotiable points for China. He stressed that these “red lines” are the foundation of China’s core interests and must remain inviolable for the sake of maintaining stable bilateral relations.
Xi reiterated that the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques form the bedrock of China-U.S. diplomatic ties, providing vital political guardrails for managing differences and conflicts between the two major powers.
The Chinese president acknowledged that contradictions and differences between China and the United States are inevitable but emphasized that such differences should not undermine the core interests of either country. Xi called for mutual respect and an avoidance of conflict or confrontation, urging both sides to adhere to these principles to ensure stability in their relationship.
The meeting comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two nations over various issues, including trade, security, and geopolitical influence, but also signals a recognition of the importance of diplomatic engagement and dialogue.
