China Leads Discussions Among Five Nuclear-Weapon States as Coordinator

Beijing, December 10, 2024 – The Europe Today: China, serving as the current coordinator of the five nuclear-weapon states mechanism, reaffirmed its commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding among the five nuclear-armed nations, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced on Tuesday.

On December 4, China convened an expert-level meeting in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, bringing together representatives from the five nuclear-weapon states: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Mao highlighted that the discussions focused on nuclear policies, with participants engaging in candid exchanges. “It was agreed that such discussion was timely for the purposes of enhancing understanding of each other’s nuclear policies and avoiding misunderstanding and misjudgment,” she stated.

As the mechanism’s coordinator, China has pledged to continue supporting dialogue among the nuclear-armed nations to strengthen mutual trust and reduce risks.

The five nuclear-weapon states mechanism plays a pivotal role in maintaining global strategic stability, with discussions aimed at preventing misunderstandings and fostering responsible nuclear policies amid evolving global challenges.
