Moscow, December 15, 2024 – The Europe Today: President Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia has confirmed that he and Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico will travel together to Moscow to attend the May 9 Victory Day Parade next year. Vučić made the announcement on Saturday during an interview with TV Informer, emphasizing the significance of the event in commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War.
The invitation for the leaders to participate in the celebrations was personally extended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting the shared historical ties between the nations and their acknowledgment of the Soviet Union’s pivotal role in defeating fascism during World War II.
Last month, Vučić had indicated his intention to attend the parade, stating, “as long as the end of the world doesn’t happen.” On Saturday, he reiterated the importance of May 9 as a day to celebrate the defeat of fascism and confirmed that he and Fico would represent their respective nations at the event in Moscow.
Prime Minister Fico initially disclosed the joint plans in November, underscoring the historical liberation of Slovakia and Serbia by the Soviet Union during the war. He noted that their attendance at the Victory Parade would serve as a symbolic gesture of recognition for the sacrifices made to defeat Nazism.
Both leaders have expressed a strong stance against any attempts to rewrite history. Vučić stated that Serbia and Slovakia remain committed to defending the legacy of the fight against fascism and honoring the memory of those who contributed to the liberation of Europe.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov revealed that the number of leaders and high-ranking officials invited to the 2025 Victory Day celebrations is comparable to those who attended the most recent BRICS summit in Kazan. The parade will also feature military contingents and leaders from member countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), including Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
As preparations for the commemorations continue, the joint participation of Vučić and Fico signals a shared commitment to preserving the historical memory of World War II and honoring the enduring significance of the Soviet Union’s victory.
