Türkiye Reaffirms Commitment to Protect All Communities in Syria and Strengthen Ties with Belgium

Ankara, January 3, 2025 – The Europe Today: Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has reiterated the country’s determination to protect all vulnerable groups in Syria while emphasizing efforts to rebuild the war-torn nation. Speaking at a joint press conference with Belgian Foreign Minister Bernard Quintin in Ankara on Thursday, Fidan underscored Türkiye’s role as a guardian for all oppressed communities.

“Whether it’s a majority or minority in Syria—Nusayris, Alevis, Yazidis, Christians, or anyone—Türkiye is their protector and guardian, as it is for all others in this new period,” Fidan stated.

Türkiye’s Humanitarian and Reconstruction Efforts in Syria

Fidan highlighted the displacement of millions during the Assad regime’s oppression, including Sunni Arabs and ethnic Turks, many of whom sought refuge in other countries. Since 2011, Türkiye has sheltered over 3 million Syrians, making significant efforts to ensure their safety and contribute to their future.

“We are committed to ensuring they live in peace in Syria’s future and remain unharmed,” Fidan said. He also stressed the importance of international support for Syria’s reconstruction and pledged Türkiye’s assistance in securing the country’s territorial integrity and stability.

Addressing Regional and International Concerns

Fidan condemned the ongoing genocide in Gaza, describing it as a threat not only to Palestinians but to the global order, and called for an immediate end to the atrocities.

On the issue of Daesh detainees in Syria, Fidan reaffirmed Türkiye’s stance that foreign militants should be repatriated to their home countries. He urged the international community to find sustainable solutions for managing detention facilities, pledging Türkiye’s support in securing camps and prisons within Syria.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties with Belgium

During discussions with his Belgian counterpart, Fidan emphasized the strong NATO alliance and the growing economic partnership between Türkiye and Belgium. The ministers explored opportunities to enhance cooperation in the defense industry and deepen trade and investment ties.

Key topics included Belgium’s support for Türkiye’s EU membership bid, customs union modernization, and visa liberalization.

Fidan also raised concerns over the presence of terror groups such as the PKK and FETO in Belgium, urging more robust measures to prevent their exploitation of local laws.

A Vision for Peace and Stability

Fidan expressed hope for a swift rebuilding of Syria, envisioning a future where its people can live in peace and security. “We are making every effort to ensure that all Syrians, regardless of their background, are protected and empowered to build a stable future,” he concluded.

The meeting underscored Türkiye’s dual focus on addressing humanitarian crises and fostering strong international alliances to ensure regional stability and global security.
