Jakarta, January 8, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesia’s Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, announced the ministry’s strategic priorities for 2025, focusing on the preservation, development, and utilization of the nation’s cultural heritage. Speaking on Tuesday, Zon emphasized the pivotal role of culture in shaping national identity and driving development in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
“Our cultural wealth is extraordinary, and we aim to make it a national asset and treasure. In the future, we hope to see more museums functioning as centers for study, literacy, narrative-building, education, and entertainment,” Zon stated.
One of the ministry’s key objectives is the comprehensive preservation and protection of cultural heritage. Zon noted that much of Indonesia’s cultural wealth remains undocumented and announced plans to conduct an inventory of collections from museums across the nation. This initiative aims to catalog and appreciate cultural values as integral parts of Indonesia’s national treasures.
The plan also includes strengthening the role of museums. Zon stressed the need for museums to transform into vibrant centers of education and entertainment, ensuring their relevance in contemporary society.
Cultural diplomacy is another cornerstone of the strategy, with the ministry committed to promoting Indonesian culture globally and working toward the repatriation of significant artifacts.
Zon also highlighted the ongoing development of cultural villages, a program designed to revitalize culture throughout the country, including remote areas. These villages will mobilize cultural actors across various disciplines such as traditional arts, fine arts, music, performing arts, and new media to preserve and promote Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.
The initiatives align with the ministry’s vision of positioning culture as an inseparable component of sustainable national development.
