Ankara, January 10, 2025 – The Europe Today: Türkiye extended its congratulations to Joseph Aoun on his election as President of Lebanon, expressing optimism for the country’s stability and regional peace under his leadership, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday.
The ministry voiced hope that the new government to be formed under Aoun’s presidency would foster stability within Lebanon and contribute to peace and prosperity in the broader region.
The Lebanese parliament elected Aoun, the army chief, as president during a second round of voting, where he secured 99 votes in the 128-seat assembly after falling short with 71 votes in the first round.
The election marked the end of a more than two-year presidential vacancy since former President Michel Aoun left office on October 31, 2022. The extended political deadlock had left Lebanon grappling with deepening political and security challenges, exacerbated by ongoing tensions with Israel.
Aoun’s election followed intensified international diplomatic efforts to resolve the stalemate, underscoring the critical importance of strong leadership in a country striving for stability. Under the Lebanese constitution, the president serves a six-year term, with the possibility of re-election after another six years.
Türkiye reaffirmed its support for Lebanon during this significant transition, emphasizing its commitment to fostering stronger ties and cooperation between the two nations.
