Geneva, February 28, 2025 – The Europe Today: Ambassador Mai Phan Dũng, Permanent Representative of Vietnam in Geneva, reiterated Vietnam’s steadfast commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation while addressing the high-level session of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva, Switzerland, from February 24-26.
Ambassador Dũng emphasized Vietnam’s recognition of the CD as the preeminent multilateral forum for global disarmament. He highlighted the country’s proactive role in CD discussions and its contributions to major disarmament agreements. Notably, Vietnam has chaired the CD on three occasions and is a signatory to key multilateral treaties on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, including the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), which was negotiated and approved within the CD framework.
Addressing concerns over global security challenges and the CD’s ongoing impasse, Dũng called for renewed commitment among member states. He urged nations to leverage recent progress, such as the establishment of working groups on substantive issues, to advance multilateral disarmament efforts.
Vietnam encouraged CD member states to uphold responsibility and political determination, foster cooperation, engage in substantive and flexible dialogue, and promote inclusivity within the forum. These measures, Dũng asserted, are crucial for overcoming stagnation and advancing the global disarmament agenda.
As an active member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Vietnam continues to support regional disarmament initiatives and the establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones worldwide. Ambassador Dũng reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to the full and effective implementation of the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ). He expressed Vietnam’s readiness to collaborate with nuclear-armed states to facilitate their signing and accession to the treaty, reinforcing regional and global security.
