Indian Wells, March 10, 2025 – The Europe Today: China’s Zhang Shuai and Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Su-wei secured a spot in the women’s doubles quarterfinals at Indian Wells with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Americans Makenna Jones and McCartney Kessler on Sunday.
The fifth-seeded duo dominated the match, winning 81 percent of their first-serve points and converting four of five break points, sealing the win in just over an hour in the Californian desert. In contrast, Jones and Kessler struggled with five double faults and managed to convert just one of 10 break point opportunities.
Zhang and Hsieh will next face Australia’s Ellen Perez and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, as they continue their quest for the title.
Chinese Pair Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan Exit the Tournament
Earlier in the competition, the Chinese pairing of Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan were eliminated following a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 defeat to Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok and American Sofia Kenin.
Kichenok and Kenin served three aces and won 77 percent of their first-serve points to secure victory in an hour and 28 minutes. The eighth-seeded pair will next face either Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend or Beatriz Haddad Maia and Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals.
Wang Xinyu Falls in Women’s Singles
Meanwhile, China’s Wang Xinyu saw her singles campaign come to an end in the third round, as she suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to American fourth seed Jessica Pegula.
World No. 42 Wang struggled with three double faults and managed to save just two of seven break points. Pegula, aiming for her eighth career WTA 1000 title, showcased her dominance by landing 78 percent of her first serves in play. She now advances to the round of 16, where she will face Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.
