Türkiye Reaffirms Commitment to Combatting Islamophobia on Christchurch Attack Anniversary

Ankara, March 16, 2025 – The Europe Today: Marking the sixth anniversary of the tragic terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, Türkiye has reiterated its unwavering commitment to combating Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred.

In a statement issued on Saturday to commemorate the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, the Turkish Foreign Ministry emphasized that the nation remains resolute in supporting all initiatives aimed at addressing hatred against Islam.

“Türkiye remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at addressing hatred against Islam,” the ministry stated, expressing deep respect for the 51 victims who lost their lives in the brutal shooting.

The statement further highlighted that Islamophobia poses a significant danger not only to Muslims but also to international peace and social harmony. It urged the global community to intensify efforts to counter hatred against Islam, especially in light of ongoing attacks on Islamic values.

On March 15, 2019, Brenton Tarrant, an Australian white supremacist terrorist, carried out a horrific attack at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, killing 51 people and injuring 40 others. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in 2020, marking the first such ruling in New Zealand’s history.

Türkiye’s call for global action against Islamophobia reflects its commitment to promoting social cohesion and protecting the fundamental rights of Muslim communities worldwide.
